Latin America, with its rich biodiversity and mostly tropical climate, is a treasure trove of delectable fruits and vegetables that have captured the taste buds of people around the world. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Latin America and the Caribbean constitutes the world’s most important exporting region for bananas followed by the four major tropical fruits – mangoes, pineapples, avocados and papayas – thereby playing a vital role in global fruit supply. On average, approximately 25 percent of total global banana and major tropical fruit production originates in Latin America and the Caribbean. That is why we embark on our global journey  of tropical fruits and vegetables in Latin America.  Would you have known that these most prolifically produced and traded fruits in the region indeed bananas, pineapples, mangoes, avocados and papayas. From exotic fruits bursting with sweetness to nutrient-packed vegetables, there are dozens of tropical specialities that prosper in this vast continent, and we will write about most of them in many blogs to come where we invite you to:

We will introduce and discuss plenty of different fruits and novel tropical vegetables with facts and figures and back them up with exiting recipes,  In this first list we just mention the top 5 export hits of these culinary delights with which to start spreading the flavours of the tropics to far-flung corners of the globe. 

Bananas

Bananas are one of the most important food crops in the world, especially in Latin America, where they are grown mostly in large monoculture plantations. They are native to tropical regions of Asia and Australia, but were introduced to Latin America by European colonizers and traders. Bananas have influenced the history and economy of many Latin American countries, where they have been a source of income, employment, and foreign exchange. Bananas are rich in fiber and potassium while low in sodium, which is good for a healthy cardiovascular system. They are also soothing to the intestinal tract because of their high content of pectin; a soluble fiber that supports bowel function. The fruit contains about 3 grams of fiber. We need fiber every day to keep our digestive system running smoothly. This fruit contains both resistant starch and soluble fiber. This combination is great for helping keep blood sugar levels balanced after meals. Fiber can also help you feel full and avoid overeating.

Pineapple

The sweet and tangy pineapple is a tropical gem loved worldwide. Grown in abundance across Latin American countries like Costa Rica, Brazil, and Colombia, this juicy fruit is not only delicious but also packed with vitamin C, manganese, antioxidants and plenty of digestive enzymes. Pineapple is a versatile ingredient, adding a tropical twist to fruit salads, salsas, desserts and refreshing beverages.

Mango

The glorious mango is a symbol of summer and indulgence, mangoes are widely cultivated in Latin American countries such as Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador Venezuela and Brazil These juicy fruits are rich in vitamins A and C, and their sweet and tropical taste is perfect for eating fresh, making chutneys, or adding to salads and desserts. “Want to add some colour to your plate? Avocados

Avocado: Known as “nature’s butter,” the avocado is a creamy and nutritious fruit in botanical term but most often used as a vegetables. It is native to Mexico but cultivated  in most Central and South America. Rich in healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, avocados have gained immense popularity in recent years. They are a staple in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and even desserts, with their smooth texture and mild, nutty flavour adding a delectable touch to various dishes. We will be discussing the vegetable in great detail in our forthcoming book on tropical fruits and vegetables with facts, anecdotes and recipes that enriches your knowledge and cooking repertoire.

Papaya

Another tropical delight from Latin America is the papaya, a luscious fruit with a vibrant orange hue. Papayas are known for their digestive enzymes, antioxidants, and high vitamin C content. This tropical treat is often enjoyed fresh, blended into smoothies, or incorporated into fruit salads for a burst of tropical flavour.
